I started the library orientation for freshmen and transferees last July 1 and ended only yesterday(July 7). This orientation was done in coordination with English Department. It was a rewarding and fulfilling experience to let them know the many benefits they could get from using the library.

Thanks to my staff, Ma. Juisa I. Robles and Vilma F. Morillo who served as my alternates. My thanks also goes to the faculty of Liberal Arts who extended their support in this endeavor namely: Amy Ibarreta, Josephine Oco, Rosalie Magistrado, Maritess Tibar, Mrs. Buendia and Frederick Tablizo.

Finally, I would like to thank Dr. Eleanor A. Osea for graciously appreciating my effort of orienting the graduate students regarding library services.

Here are some of the pictures taken during the orientation.

Birthday celebration

It has been five years since I spent my natal day in my hometown (Boac,Marinduque). This year, being my 55th birthday ( April 13, 2009) I decided to spend it the traditional way.... "putong" (coronation). The old folks believe that "putong" will bring luck to the person. It is also one way of welcoming a guest. This "putong" group is composed of elderly persons mostly women chanting a prayer of supplication and thanks. My being sickly the past year was one of the reasons why I resorted to this ritual.

To have a respite from my busy world, I also visited one of the beaches in our hometown for free. This keeps our library collection updated.

Mr. Roger "Ogie' Mallillin is the ever hardworking director of this foundation. Anday (former Chief Librarian of UP-Los Banos) when something happened. Just a few meters away from the memorial chapel (St. Peter) where the remains of my friend was laid in estate, a closed van was zigzaging toward our direction. The driver of the bus (Raymond 5308) made a sudden stop to avoid collision with the oncoming van. The impact was so great that I was pushed to the front resulting minor bruises on my right face and arms. The van, on the other hand, made a turtle turn on its own hitting no one. Thanks God, otherwise , it would be a great disaster.

Despite this incident , I was able to attend the funeral rites which lasted up to 2:30 PM. The eldest daughter of Vilma, Audrey was kind enough to provide me a cold compress for my bruises. I arrived home (Iriga City, Camarines Sur) safe and sound. I would never forget this one.

You might be wondering why I took the trouble of travelling five long hours just to attend her wake. The answer is plain and simple ....... we are both a breast cancer patient. The only difference is that, I am a survivor and she is not. I was operated in 1992 and with the grace of God, I am still alive and kicking.

I am sick

The entry of 2009 was really bad for me. It's a little bit chilly here in Iriga City. Despite this "bed" weather, I have to wake up early to attend the simbang gabi which starts at 4:00AM. Since the time I joined UNEP in November 2004, this activity has always been a yearly affair that everybody is looking forward to.

To commemorate this occasion, we have prepared various contests such as: storytelling for grade 4-6 pupils using the book "Kala-kahati (Half-half) by Grace D. Chong, an essay writing contest for first to fourth year students and poster making contest for college students. The last two were theme-based (Ang batang palabasa dalubhasa sa kultura) contest.

The celebration was highlighted by a seminar-workhop on storytelling conducted by my good friend, Zarah C. Gagatiga, from Xavier School, Greeenhills, San Juan City. Participants came from as far as Masbate, an island north of Sorsogon, Philippines. Zarah, being an A-1 storyteller captured the audience with her spontaneous and charming ways. I think part 2 is needed to appease the clamor.

My "thank you" piece goes to the following persons: Ma'am Delicia R. Alfelor-Tibi, our beloved Vice President for Finance for without her support, this would not be possible. Likewise, to our dear Grade School Principal, Mrs. Editha F. Evangelista for hosting the storytelling contest. Of course, to Arch. Jose B. Malazarte, dean of the College of Engineering and Architecture for taking care of the backdrop. Siyempre, to my hardworking staff who did the dirty job. Kudos to a job well done!

The accompanying pictures will attest to the success.
